John Borrero - Artist Statement
I am a storyteller. My inspiration to illustrate grows from my love of stories.
I search for forgotten things… rusty metal, driftwood, objects carried to land by the ocean, old photographs; antique doll parts... items with no purpose.
Then a story comes.
In my studio, I bring these items together until they take shape either in sculpture or on wood panel.
I try to take items that are ugly...and flawed and make them beautiful.
I am self-taught. I try to allow myself to be guided in my art, by my love for history, mythology, religion and folklore.
My sculptures are made with found objects and antique items, shaped together until they take form and gain a sense of personality.
My paintings are made on wood panel with layers of mixed media elements. The process is intuitive. I follow where the painting leads me.
In the process, I hope to make art that conveys depth and humor, darkness and light, humanity and divinity.
