Sarah Hunter - Artist Statement
I am a still life painter based
out of Philadelphia. My work depicts an imagined future where humans have gone
the way of the passenger pigeon and the remaining animals have reclaimed the
earth. Here within a newly changed environment characters interact with the
debris of a past civilization.Playing out some sort of obscure narration, the paintings attempt to
address themes of uncertainty, displacement, and the drive to survive.
My work is influenced greatly by
early naturalist artists (including Audubon and Mark Catesby.) I also spend a
lot of time looking at the dioramas at the Academy of Natural Sciences. I first
saw these dioramas when I was a small child and have been trying on some level
to recreate a bit of that feel. When constructing dioramas the artists used
different elements and techniques (painting, sculpting, taxidermy) each with
different realities that add up to a coherent whole.I try in my work to combine painted cutout-like forms,
rendered object and graphite drawn marks to create a world that is accepted as
a snippet of a bigger place.
I studied oil painting at the
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and have shown most recently with SOMA
Gallery (Cape May), The Rodger Lapelle Gallery (Philadelphia) and The Painting
Center (New York).
