Stan Sperlak explains it all... video below-
SOMA NewArt Gallery is pleased to announce, The View from My Easel,
a solo exhibition of new ocean, marsh, and field-scapes by renowned regional artist
Stan Sperlak. For his show at SOMA, Sperlak has created an outstanding body of work inspired by the dramatic natural beauty of the Cape Island Peninsula. Skillfully rendered,
this sensational new work brings another dimension to a career that has made
Stan Sperlak one of the most respected and collected artists working in the region.

The southern-most reaches of the Jersey coast have long been a favorite subject of the artist.  When Stan paints from nature, he distills it into its essential color and form, to enhance the visual appeal by reducing the discordant realities into a subtle yet powerful unity of color and form. In this new work for SOMA, the beaches, skies, dunes, marshes and fields are all represented in a deeply colorful and painterly way.  Although much detail is suggested, close inspection of these gorgeous pastels will reveal that Sperlak’s latest paintings are more color fields with brush marks that allow the viewer to fill in the details and moods.  Each pastel painting captures the subtle natural beauty of the Jersey Shore, with the vivid mastery of color, texture, and form.

New to this exhibit, Sperlak will introduce a series of paintings adding figurative imagery to his landscapes: children sitting at waters edge, a couple walking on the beach, father and son wading into the ocean, a surfer, a skim-boarder; summer vignettes at the shore.  Also to mix it up a bit, as if a still life, Stan has painted individual portraits of abandon autos in summer fields, with a bit of nostalgia added in.  This exhibit is a wonderful mix of traditional Sperlak with a new twist that is sure to intrigue.

Stan Sperlak is a juried member of the Pastel Society of America, the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters, the Maryland Pastel Society, and Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts in Millville.  He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Stan teaches pastel painting in the plein-air tradition at his many pastel workshops through out the year.

Stan Sperlak's exhibition, The View From My Easel
is also the title of Stan's new book

filled with vivid pastel paintings of Southern Jersey landscapes.
Over his career, Stan has created an outstanding body of work
inspired by the dramatic natural
beauty of the Cape May peninsula.
This book is a sensational compilation of Stan's work, and brings another
opportunity to view some of the many paintings created by one of the
most respected and collected artists working in the region.
